UPDATE: SOLUTION FOUND
A solution has been found for the R4i System Date error as of the 1st of May 2010 – please scroll to the bottom of this page for details.
R4i SDHC System Date Error / Freeze / Problem
This seems to be a problem that’s only recently surfaced – we’ve received e-mails from both members of the public and the stores on our Where to Buy page after the first week of April. The problem seems to have started, for whatever reason, around the 10th of April, 2010 (earliest reports, although we’ve been getting different dates from different places). It’s possible the error has something to do with the numerical value of the date i.e. 10-04-10. The error seems to be as follows:
The error says, “Loading… System date error! Please check NDS system date.”
R4i SDHC Loading
Typically with the R4 and R4i series of cards, the “Loading…” error message is usually something to do with the software. The exception to this is the fake versions of the R4 card such as the R4v3 and some versions of the R4 Ultra that have the “Menu?” error instead – these cards are fake but ironically wouldn’t experience this error.
The good news is that this really is a software error. After some playing around with an original R4i SDHC card as well as some of the e-mails we’ve received, we think that the error can be caused by any one of the following:
- The Nintendo DS or DSi console running out of battery,
- Transferring a .SAV file from a different user who perhaps has a different date on their DS or DSi console, or
- Attempting to activate cheats in certain applications.
System Date Error Fix / Solution
The system date error on the R4i SDHC seems to be software related. We know this because in most of the stiuations we’ve heard about, changing the date to a few days before the current date seems to fix the problem in the majority of cases! So we’d recommend this first. Try to set the Nintendo DS or DSi’s settings so that the date goes back a few days (usually to before the error occured). In the majority of cases, this has instantly fixed the problem. It’s still unclear whether waiting a few more days (after fixing the System Date Error) and setting the date back to normal would be acceptable as well – so please keep e-mailing your feedback so we can update this page as required.
One of the stores on the Where to Buy page has even reported to us that one of their customers needed to turn their DSi’s clock back by one MONTH to fix the problem – although so far we’ve only heard one story about this and are not sure why this case needed a longer set-back.
Please do keep e-mailing in so we can understand more about the issue.
New Kernel / Software for the R4i SDHC
The R4i SDHC team were always aware of this problem as mentioned on the official website’s F.A.Q. page but unfortunately it has very little information on it so far and doesn’t talk much about the possible solutions that we have found here.
We have e-mailed the team and have been assured they’re looking into it, but we won’t know how long it takes for them to come up with a permanent fix. In the mean time, at least it’s only date that’s the problem – people can still use their R4i SDHC cards as normal.
Also, we’ve heard that most people are actually doing just fine with their R4i SDHC cards – so it’s also a minority (possible those that have transferred .SAV files or had their console run out of battery) that are affected as well.
If a new kernel comes out that fixes the problem for everyone in the future, we will update this page as required. Please do spread this page / URL around if you’ve found it helpful!
Solution to the R4i SDHC System Date Error
We were e-mailed on the 1st of May, 2010 from NDS-Gear, who claim to have isolated some portion of code in the R4i SDHC’s software that was the cause of the problem. They have fixed this problem and as a result they now have firmware on their website (R4i SDHC software download page here) that will fix the System Date error! Please download and use this latest firmware if you are using THE LEGITIMATE / GENUINE / REAL version of the R4i SDHC (www.r4i-sdhc.com NOT www.r4sdhc.com). If you have done this but it still doesn’t work, please e-mail us by going to our contact page so we can investigate accordingly. Hurray, problem solved!!
